One of the most exciting festivals in India, the Kavadi
Festival of Tamil Nadu is a blend of faith, sacrifice, glamor and custom.
The extreme pain and sacrifice, a devotee undergoes to offer his prayers to
Lord Muruga is known as the Kavadi. This day assumes significance because of the star Uthiram and Pournami (full moon) occurring together.

The devotees prepare themselves by following strict purification austerities that include, The preparations start 48 days before the adi kirthika festival. Transcendence of desire Following a vegetarian diet and refraining from alcohol Sexual abstinence Bathing in cold water Sleeping on the floor Regular prayers. The devotees purge themselves of all mental and physical impurities. They take only one vegetarian meal every day for 41days/ 21days/11days before adi kirthika day , they must maintain a complete fast.

On this day devotees to the temple of Lord Subramanya
or Murugan will carry ‘Pal kavadi, Panneer kavadi, Pushpa kavadi and perform
special ‘Abishekams’ and poojas to Lord Muruga, to mark the occasion. Hatkeshwar Circle at 7 am.

In
this festival devotees will visit the Sri Balamurugan Devasthanam Trust to
fulfil their vows. Some will even pierce their cheeks with sharp objects or
pull small carts with iron hooks attached to their body. Some devotees tonsure
their head and donate the hair to Lord Subramanya. One of the most difficult Kavadi offerings is the Agni
Kavadi, where the devotee has to walk over a pit of burning coals while
carrying the Kavadi. Egged by the watching crowd and boosted by the beating
drums and fragrance of the burning incense sticks, the Kavadi bearer
ecstatically walks through the red hot coals.
